Snacking and Stitching. A no-no??

How many of you snack and stitch?  I do.  I try to choose fabric-friendly snacks because more often than not I'm stitching a model.  I've been working on my Beatrix Potter Quaker this weekend and today I had a craving for potato chips.  NOT the type of food you eat while stitching. . . . . not unless you want a greasy needle and thread.  So I stopped, took a picture of the chips in the bag, and wondered what do you snack on while stitching. . . . . . .or is it completely off-limits to you?
I did pick up a great tip from Jean Lea at The Attic Needlework in Mesa, AZ.  If you want to eat chocolate like M&M's, put them in a cup and use the cup, not your hands to get them into your mouth.

Reply to this blog post with your favorite stitching snack food or snacking-while-stitching tip and I'll enter you in random number drawing for the new "Summer Splendor" chart.  Let's say the cut-off is Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. Arizona time.

Happy Stitching,
Diane

  2. I have for years snacked on Cheerios! First they are "clean" to eat, secondly I tell myself I am snacking healthy. But oh I will admit that chips are so good.....
    I like the M&M tip.

  4. Jelly Bellies, my own mix from Target and Cadbury mini-eggs with the candy coating, yummy. Potato chips, not so good ;-).

  5. Grapes! Those great big purple seedless grapes from Costco are my favorite stitching snack. But I do have a huge weakness for kettle cooked potato chips.

  6. Currently, my favorite snack is fresh cherries. I know that they are not fabric friendly, but they are oh so good.

  7. I stop and have ice cream - my favorite treat!

  9. Quacker Oatmeal Squares...preferably the cinnamomn ones:) But right now M&Ms are sounding pretty tempting.

  10. if you like those cheesy puff things, put them in a bowl and eat them with a fork. a gamer friend of mine does that and I thought it was ingenious - no more orange fingers or orange keyboard! For me, I don't snack while stitching, but the M&M in cup thing has given me ideas now!

  11. If I do snack, it's usually popcorn. I put it in a big bowl and then I just put my face in the bowl and stick my tongue out to eat it! It sounds weird, but I don't use my hands that way. It does have to be a BIG bowl though! :-)

  12. I usually stop stitching for a snack. What the snack could be is anything!
    The M&Ms ar a good idea :)

  13. I try very hard not to snack when stitching...maybe a Diet Pepsi or ice tea! If I get the urge to eat it is usually M&M peanuts and I love the bowl tip...thanks for the chance to win one of your new designs...fun! pjstitcher

  14. Pretzels are my usual fare and those aren't greasy. I do like mixed nuts sometimes and like Jean Lea said - I put them in a small cup and snack from the cup. Thanks for the chance in the drawing.

  15. I never snack while I'm stitching but I will stop stitching and have a snack then come back to my stitching. My favorite snack is Spiced Peach Crumble Haagendaz. A great idea for a chart.

  16. I love to get up early before the kids and stitch with my first couple of cups of coffee for the day - not exactly a snack but a very peaceful stitching time. At night I usually stop for a little bowl of ice cream :-) Thanks for this fun drawing and the great M&M tip - I will be trying that!!! Meredith

  17. Cookies--especially oatmeal! But I do stop, eat, wash and start stitching again! I also love that M&M's tip!! Hugs.

  18. I am a nightime stitcher. I try not to eat after 7 pm. I use my stitching as a diet tool. But there is usually a glass of wine near by. Thanks for a fun blog. Beth N. (stormybrew57@aol.com)

  19. Apple because they aren't messy. Mostly I don't snack and stitch. Not only is it dangerous but it is easy to eat mindlessly.

  20. Lately I have been snacking on cherries while stitching, but if there is ever any doubt, I wash my hands yet again. Thanks foy the idea of taking M & Ms ...or other similar small items from a cup. Or maybe it would have been better if I didn't have this info!

  21. No snacking, but I do drink sodas while I stitch. I have paid for this with light brown spots on my stitching twice in my stitching career, but I just can't stop myself! So I suppose my tip would be "Don't do it!"

    ReplyDelete
  22. No snacking during stitching; which is really helpful as I just joined Weight Watchers. However, if I do need some popcorn or something I stop stitching and go read stitching blogs while snacking!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Usually my cravings revolve around sweets. I tend to stop stitching for a few moments to snack and then make sure my fingers are clean before resuming the stitches. I have used the m&m in the cup trick before as well!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm so klutzy that I'm afraid to snack and stitch very much. I usually put down my stitching, do my snacking, and pick it up again. I love the nibbles in cups idea. You can put your allotted portion (yep, a Weight Watcher too)in your cup and keep from inhaling large quantities.

  25. I've been on a healthy food diet now for about 2 weeks, so I'm onto healthy snacks...almonds!! I never though I would be the type to snack on almonds, but yep. I am!! I've lost about 7 pounds so far!

  26. My favorite snack would be something chocolate or ice cream, or if I'm feeling healthy it's frozen grapes which are really sticky! and for all of those I have to take a break. BUT, if I'm in one of those eating-everything-in-sight moods, it would be cheerios out of a cup. That's my favorite weekend breakfast, so I can read the paper, be on the computer, or stitch!

  27. I do not eat while stitching but have been known to sip on some wine while stitching which can sometimes lead to frogging!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Love the tip for M & M's, I have two favorites, they are Jelly Bellys an Swedish Fish! Yum!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like grapes, no grease and not sticky:) love the M&M idea! Thanks for the chance:)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I usually snack on Jelly Beans because they don't leave any trace. I also love swedish fish but I like the suggestion of using a cup for m&m's might have to try that.

  31. Nope shouldn't snack and stitch, but I admit to sneaking M&M's while stitching. I keep them handy and just grab one at a time. :D Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, I snack when I stitch. Yes, I snack on things I probably shouldn't while I stitch, but I use a spoon or chopsticks (as appropriate to the food) so my fingers stay clean.

  33. I think I am completely spoiled. usually I stitch with my sweetie sitting beside me and if we need a snack I am ashamed to admit it, but he feeds me the little treat so my hands and needlework are safe.Works for us. Never had a mess yet ! Jo Ann

  34. Any kind of Chocolate with wrappers on it works!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh boy...peanut butter M&Ms, swedish berries, licorice...I could go on and on and on ;o) I never mix snacking with stitching though. My hands have to be clean!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm more of a Pepsi Throwback while stitching kind of gal... although I will stop for awhile and eat warm chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven. Especially if I'm listening to a Jane Austen audiobook from Librivox. Then I have something to keep me busy while I'm eating. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fresh blueberries or cherries (spoon to mitigate any juice risk to fabric) or Red Vines if I need something less healthy... LOL Usually, though, it's just a big glass of ice water.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmmmm....I'm dieting and working on seeing things like taking the time to stitch as the treat instead of cookies and chocolate. So, no snacks while stitching. (Besides, I have bad memories of a chocolate spot that got on a sampler years ago, despite attempts to be careful....)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Usually I stop stitching to snack, but like several others, I usually have something to drink, hot or cold whichever strikes me at the time. Thanks for the contest.

I try to never snack while stitching because I,too, have gotten chocolate on a sampler, plus I am trying to take off a few unwanted pounds. So I would have to say NO NO to snacking! I should have known Jean Lea would have the secret antidote for combatting the snacking challenge. We are SO blessed to have her and her amazing store in our community. LOVE her!

  43. After a disastrous Earl-Grey-tea-meets-stitching incident, I stopped keeping snacks & drinks (except a glass of water) near me while I stitch.

I get up every 20-30 minutes to stretch and wash my hands and, if I have the munchies, I'll grab a snack then. However, I find that I get so into my stitching that I usually don't think about eating.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I drink sweet tea while stitching a lot, but usually in a cup with a lid. I also like eating candy sprees. They are not messy-no residue on your hands. Love the cup idea!

Thanks for the chance to win. :)

  45. Nuts, I love them and have been using the cup thing for years. Thanks for having a great giveaway.

  46. Wheat Thins are my favorite "go to" snack - which I get up and do, away from my stitching. Thank you for offering this giveaway!

  47. I do most of my stitching at night so try to stay away from snacks but am sometimes tempted and then I do put my work down. Chips are my favourite but no way to eat them and carry on stitching, I like the idea of drinking M&M's

    ReplyDelete
  48. Another tip, when eating chocolate or M&Ms or others that can make your fingers sticky, place snacks in a bowl and use a spoon instead of fingers..........cool huh.

  49. My fave snacks while I'm stitching ... uhm.... many and many ...above all cookies ... with yougurt or cherry ^__*

    ReplyDelete
  52. When I'm trying to be good I eat fresh fruit, cut up in a bowl and eaten with a fork or spoon. Most of the time only chips or sweets will do. Then I stop stitching and wash my hands carefully before resuming.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I let my stitching keep me from snacking. Two goals met at once - stitching progress and less calorie intake.

I do not snack while stitching. But I do get up occasionally and eat chocolate chips. Dark chocolate! Then I wash my hands.

I don't snack while stitching. I may have a drink but that is it... Now when I am done stitching my favorite snack is ice cream in the summer.. I like the cup idea M&M's leave the color on your hand sometimes!

  58. I learned the hard way to not snack and stitch. I completed a design for a friend and then found a distinct thumb print from some unknown snack on it. I could not get it out, couldn't frame around it, and had to throw the piece away. Grrr...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I both snack and drink when I stitch. On occasions, I have a glass of wine and some cheese and crackers to go with it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Having lost over half my original body weight over the last couple of years I've had to learn to NOT snack when stitching lol. But prior to that I also had chocolate on hand as I was and am still a chocoholic.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like to snack on strawberry Twizzlers. Sometimes I eat goldfish and eat them from a cup instead of using my hands.

  66. I'm with Jean Lea on the M&M's tip. If I do eat anything while stitching, I try to make it something that I don't have to hold. Otherwise I have to stop, eat, wash my hands and start stitching again. Plus, I try not to keep open soda cans or coffee cups anywhere near my stitching. I had that disaster once.....and it wasn't even my soda that spilled!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I never ever snack and stitch, in fact I recommend stitching as a great way of stopping the evening nibbling. I never thought of people drinking M&Ms!
I love Jo Ann's idea, does your sweetie peel grapes before feeding you like the Roman emperors?

I don't snack & stitch ... but I do usually have something to drink. I love the idea of "drinking" my M&Ms from a cup!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Great tip about the M & Ms in a cup! I try not to snack while stitching, but when I "have" to have something, I usually go for pretzels -- not greasy, and the small ones are just a mouthful, so no crumbs. If I "require" a messy snack, I do stop stitching and wash my hands afterward.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Animal crackers, I love them!

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a great idea for using a cup for M&M's I do not snack when I stitch unless it is M&M's or Reeses pieces. If I have to touch the food that leaves residue of any kind, than I take a break from stitching to have my snack

    ReplyDelete
  72. Love a cup of tea with maybe some cookies. Once I get into stitching the tea usually gets cold. Stitching has helped a little in cutting back my snacking.

  80. I usually have a big cup of iced or hot tea nearby. Once a month I treat myself to a couple of Loveland Sweets (a local candy store) handmade caramels. My most favorites of favorites. I carefully untwist one end of the wax paper wrapper and take tiny bites to make it last. Heaven.
