Do you remember my Granny Square Afghan?

A while back I bought yarn to create an old fashioned granny afghan.  Well, it fell into the category of UFO, collected some dust and then was remembered by me a year and a half later.  I think I had put it away because I just didn't like all of the black (even though I decorate with a LOT of black).  And too, if you own a dog that sheds a lot (me, me, me!), you know black seems to be a magnet.  So in showing a friend my squares, it occurred to me to simply change the direction and make the dominate color the beige that was already in each square.

It had taken on a completely different look by emphasizing the beige.  All that is left is the joining and the border!  For anyone interested in colors, you will need the following in Vanna's Choice by Lion Brand: Honey, Beige, Black and Dusty Green.

Happy Stitching,
Diane

  1. I love granny square afghans and the colors you've chosen are stunning. Great idea making the tan the dominant color instead of the black.
    Blessings!

  4. Diane, I'm so glad you had that revelation and finished your afghan! I love the colors! My grandmother taught me to crochet granny squares many, many, many years ago. I had hours of fun making those squares in a variety of color combos. Maybe one day I'll pick it up again!

  6. Very pretty. I never could crochet, but I like looking at them. Post a picture of the finished afghan when you get it put together and bordered. Those definitely are your colors.

  9. Very pretty. Of course, if you have a pet that has both light AND dark fur (like my maine coon cat), no matter what I do, the fur shows!

Lovely colour combo - but then all your colour combinations are so nice in all your designs. You've inspired me to give it a try - in a throw size at least! Thanks for sharing your inspiraitons.

    1. Mine is a throw Colleen. In Arizona we don't have much need for anything larger. :) Let me know how you do!

Hi Diane love the Granny Square colors it will be a treasured heirloom! I have a question about the Granny Square, do you have a problem with it leaning to the right? I have a friend who had that problem and the only way she could solve it was to turn it after completing each row. If you have any suggestions on how to solve the problem without turning it we all would appreciate any help you could give us.

    1. The way I learned is to alternate the direction of the stitching. In other words, the back side shows on one row then the front. When I reach the end of the row I join with a slip stitch, chain 3 and turn the work. Then I stitch 2 DC in the opening (the ch 3 counts as the first DC).

      The squares aren't leaning. :)

That looks so pretty and fluffy! I have an ancient one I made almost 40 years ago in blues out of Red Heart yarns and it refuses to die! I swear that old RH yarn is bulletproof. You've inspired me to finally retire it and donate it to a shelter and make a new one with more updated colors and smaller squares.

  22. I love your afghan! I know there are tons of granny square patterns out there, but I can't seem to find this particular one. Would you be so kind as to point me in the right direction?
