Pinterest

With the popularity of Pinterest on the rise, I wanted to share something with you.  The items that are pinned to boards are sometimes protected by copyright.  It has become a huge problem for designers in our industry that find themselves again on the front line battling to retain their copyrights and their jobs.

Personally I do not mind if you share Little House finishes and pattern covers.  Shops do it, bloggers do it, and I do it.

This first pin is perfectly ok with me.

The second photo shows what is NOT ok.  It is a clear violation of the copyright.  Before you pin a chart, look at it carefully to see if it says it is a free chart and can be distributed or if it has a copyright and maybe even a warning.

The industry thanks you and I thank you for continuing to educate yourself and others in this matter.  And a HUGE thank-you to those who take their time to report the illegal pins to designers.

Happy Stitching,
Diane

  1. I don't understand how anyone can put up a chart and still have a clear conscious. Its unbelievable! I have seen some people post other charts and have written in the comments that what they are doing is ILLEGAL!!!! Good luck!

  2. I agree. I love seeing all the designs and my fingers go right to my favorite web sites to order. Sharing the directions and guide on Pinterest is just WRONG !!

    1. When you find an infringement, send the link to the designer and they will report it to Pinterest. Thank you!

  7. The Internet is good for many things, but for those who depend on having good ideas to work and suddenly they are copied is not very good.
I saw that you have a Golden Retriever. I also have one, are sweet sweet.

  8. I quite agree, even if a design is a freebie then it's still rude to post the chart. Link to the original page and let people discover the designer and have a chance to purchase some of their other pieces.
I think sending more customers to them is a great Thank You to the people that give their designs for free.

    1. Well said Jo: the freebies introduce us to the designers. I have often (well, always) bought charts after finding freebies I like. We should support our crafty community.

  9. I have noticed this too and have left comments that these are copyrighted material. Will Pinterest not remove these pins? Still sad what people will do.

  11. No way was that done in ignorance; we all know you cannot post charts online.

  12. If you enlarge the picture in question, on the right side of the picture you will see a place to report the violation to Pinterest. If you write in the reason as copyright violation, they will check on it.
